Windows: Network folders do not refresh automatically in Windows Explorer

by Stephen Horsfield 8. January 2008 17:11

Overview

Sometimes you have to manually refresh folders in Windows XP to see changes that have taken place on network servers.

Context

When you create or delete any file in one or more network folders, you have to refresh the display to see the changes.  This can happen with any folder, but most frequently when you are using Microsoft DFS technology.

Solution

You need to follow the instructions in File list in the Windows Explorer folder is not refreshed after you create, move, or delete files (Microsoft Support).  This requires two things:

  1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 2
  2. Make a registry change as below:
    1. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    3. Type NoSimpleNetIDList, and then press ENTER.
    4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
    5. Type 1, and then click OK.

Note: These instructions are copied from the Microsoft article.

Did this, followed the instructions, as on Microsoft's page, and it didn't fix it. After reboot, fault reappears on 2nd or 3rd folder editing operation.

Any other ideas?

Hi Alan,

I've checked your forum entry and I can't see evidence that you are using DFS.  DFS is a server technology that runs on Microsoft Windows Server with client components on Windows 2000, XP and Vista.  There are other reasons why you won't see changes, for example:

1)  It depends on the ability of the server to notify your computer of changes.  If you are not using Windows Servers then this may have issues

2)  It depends on the use of Offline files.  In particular, there can be problems if the computer clocks are not in sync

3)  And of course there may be other bugs

I wouldn't suggest this article for your scenario.  I would recommend that you start by using the NETDIAG tool from Microsoft.

Sorry, I can't be more helpful!  If you have further comments I'll be happy to respond.
